UBC Continuing Professional Development Course Calender 2015-2016

For UBC Continuing Professional Development Co-op (2015)

Type: Graphic and User Interface Design

Tools: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign

Goal: It was a four months-long solo graphic design project for UBC CPD (University of British Columbia Continuing Professional Development) course calendar.

Task: My task as a graphic designer was to create the course calendar brochure containing information about the programs and the courses offered by UBC Continuing Professional Development. 10,000 copies were mailed out to physicians and medical professionals in Canada. Working in a team of seven people and as their graphic designer, my goal was to create a calendar containing year worth of course information (location, credit type, credit number, course title and icons).

Challenge: Having to fit a year's worth of course information into 21 inch by 19-inch paper was the biggest challenge of this project. I created more than 20 drafts in InDesign to explore different options. I emailed the drafts to the team to get some feedback on the visual design. Ultimately, finding the optimal spacing between each line of text and switching to vertical format from a circular layout of text improved readability. Increased white space between each course made the course calendar seem less overwhelming with the amount of text it has.

Result: Using the vertical timeline concept, we moved away from the round wheel layout in the 2014-2015 year course calendar. I chose the vertical timeline format because it is easier to compare courses and criteria and schedule. The medical professional who is interested in the UBC CPD program can quickly find the course available for each month.
